Dandruff! Apart from affecting your wardrobe, robs you of your mental peace and self-confidence. Simplistically, dandruff is nothing but excessive flaking of the scalp skin due to infection, stress, dietary deficiency or physiological reasons like increased shedding of skin and excessive sebum production. Below are some simple tips to overcome dandruff.
- Avoid excessive use of oil, gel, spray and strong shampoo.
- Supplement your diet with vitamin B and zinc either by having foods like banana, spinach, broccoli, sweet potato, seafood or through dietary supplements.
- Some hair loss medications like Minoxidil increase incidence of dandruff. Try a different form or reduce the strength of the medication.
- For severe dandruff, use medicated anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week. Leave lather for 10 minutes before washing. If dandruff is mild, washing hair thrice in week with any mild shampoo is enough.
- For dandruff with severe flaking and itching, a 2% salicylic acid with topical steroid lotion application on scalp provides quick relief. Avoid scratching of scalp as it can give rise to pin point bleeding. Antihistaminic medication can provide temporary relief.
- Associated acne should be treated simultaneously for best results.
