“Screen” your sunscreen

I have often observed people going after the higher SPF sunscreen as the best one. Apart from this myth, there are other factors that you need to focus on while choosing Importence-of-sunscreen.jpgyour sunscreen. The right sunscreen is key to protect your skin against harmful ultraviolet rays, which cause skin burns, suntan, wrinkles and skin cancers.

Decode the Sun Protection Factor
SPF is a time measure of protection against UV-B rays, which are responsible for mainly skin burn and skin cancer. For example, SPF 30 protects your skin for around four hours and is ideal for daily use. However, you might need a higher SPF for a full day beach trip.

UV-A rays are a major cause of tanning and long term skin damage such as premature wrinkling. Often neglected, PA score is displayed as +/* just below SPF. Go for at least a +++/*** one. A “Broad Spectrum” label on your sunscreen meets this criterion.

Choose the right form – lotion/cream/gelcream/spray
Lotions are great over the body while creams are good over the face. Individuals with acne prone skin should use non-greasy gelcreams.  Sprays are very convenient to apply while outdoors for a day long trek or beach trip.

Do not avoid, match!
Major excuses for avoiding sunscreen are its greasy or white cast look or its balling out after applying makeup on it. Choosing a sunscreen with correct consistency and skin tone that match your skin can help you fix this.

Expect more
Individuals with acne prone skin or very sensitive skin should look for labels such as “noncomedogenic” or “for sensitive skin”. If your activity involves contact with water, look for “water resistant”. There are special sunscreens made for children.

  1. Thank you so much for opening such an informative and wonderful blog about skin care. Skin is that one part of our body which has always made us concerned and I personally have been very finicky about it. The challenges we face in this day and age with protecting our skin in a bustling urban environment and a very busy schedule is enormous. We definitely look into a variety of avenues from skincare journals to a web based blogs and most of us come out confused and unhappy. We find it extremely hard to get to a concrete and a consummate solution to our dermatological predicament. When I came across this blog, the one thing that stood out was its simplicity and ease in explaining some of the complex and daily dermatological issues we face. I have been following this blog from its inception and have found all articles in it to be very helpful and farsighted. The one article that I found to be the best was the “Screen” your sunscreen blog. One aspect in skin care which we all ignore is sun rays and the exposure of our skin to harsh sunlight. That very aspect of our skin care which can prove to be very costly and transcends beyond our cosmetic concerns. I would like to give my thumbs up and eagerly look forward to more informative blogs from our dear Dermagirl.
